Practical Details Explained

Click each section to learn what you'll need, where to park, and what to bring along.

Distance & Difficulty +

Dunmore East cliff path is 4.2 km one way. Terrain is mostly level with one gentle climb near the midpoint. Waterford harbour stroll is 3 km, completely flat. Both take roughly 90 minutes at a relaxed pace with stops.

What to Bring +

Comfortable walking shoes (not sneakers). A light jacket — weather changes fast near water. Sunscreen even on cloudy days. Bring water and a light snack. Binoculars if you're interested in birds. A camera or phone works too.

Best Times to Walk +

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer works well but gets busier on weekends. Winter is quiet and atmospheric but bring extra layers. Avoid walking during high tide if you're unfamiliar with the paths. Morning light is best for photography.

Getting There +

Dunmore East is 25 minutes from Waterford city centre. Follow the R683 toward the coast. Parking is at the harbour. Waterford harbour walks start near the quay — plenty of free parking nearby. Bus services available from the city if you prefer not to drive.

What Retirees Say About These Walks

People who've walked these paths. Their experience, in their words.

"We weren't sure about the cliff path at first. Worried it'd be too much. But the route is brilliant — you can do as much or as little as you want. Stopped at every bench and took our time. Best part of our week."

Margaret & Derek Walking since 2021

"The harbour walk is perfect for days when I don't feel like going far. It's flat, there's water views the whole way, and I can pop into a café halfway. Doesn't feel rushed. I've done it probably twenty times now and still notice new things."

Aoife Regular walker

"Brought my camera to get some nature shots. The bird spots they mention actually work — saw a heron three times. The guides are clear and the maps are proper. No confusion, no getting lost. That's what matters at this stage."
